Words inspire. I am constantly motivated, excited, galvanized by the words of others. Especially when it comes to writing. For those that have made writing a lifestyle, I need to be encouraged by them, to use their words to fuel my own work and my life.
Writing puts life on the page. It draws it out, maps our emotions and experiences. We all write, in one way or another. We use words to communicate, to connect, and to understand. Most advice I've encountered about writing translates to life as well. What we put into our writing, we should put into our lives, and vice versa.
The following are quotes that have particular meaning to me, as a writer, and as a human being navigating the muddy waters of life. These I share with you, but encourage you to add your own to the list:
"The creative process is a process of surrender, not control." - Julia Cameron
"Passion is one great force that releases creativity. Because if you're passionate about something, you're more willing to take risks." - Yo Yo Ma
"Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you want to go." - Natalie Goldberg
"Something about making art has to do with overcoming things, giving us a clear opportunity for doing things in ways we have always known we should do them." - David Bayles
"You must stay drunk on writing so reality will not destroy you." - Ray Bradbury
"Growth is an erratic movement forward. Two steps forward, one step back. Remember this and be very gentle with yourself." - Julia Cameron
"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." - Scott Adams
"All that is necessary to break the spell of inertia and frustration is this: Act as if it were impossible to fail. That is the talisman, the formula, the command of right about face which turns us from failure to success." - Dorothea Brande
"It is never about how good your voice is; it is only about feeling the urge to sing, and then having the courage to do it with the voice you are given." - Elizabeth Berg
In other words, be brave, go out into the world and sing. At the top of your lungs. Face fear. Write.
